Dr Liu received his PhD in John Innes Centre/UEA in 1996, did his postdoc studies at OSU, and worked as a Group Leader/Senior Scientist in Plant Research International from 1999 to 2005. He is now the Director General of Institute of Crop Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (ICS-CAAS), the Secretary General of the Crop Science Society of China, and a professor at the Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences, China. His group studies embryo and endosperm development using rice and Arabidopsis, with major focus on zygotic activation, embryo patterning. aleurone differentiation and inter-cellular signal transduction. Through mutagenesis and genetic screening, he developed elite rice lines of rice with thick aleurone and, consequently, an improved nutritional profile.
